Program Description

Event Details

To celebrate Flossmoor’s Centennial, the library will host a book club, this summer only, that discusses titles released in the early 1920s era. All are welcome and refreshments will be served. In August we will discuss Cane by Jean Toomer (1923). The library will have extra copies available for checkout three weeks prior to the discussion date. Please arrive at the meeting having read the book and ready for discussion.

Book Description:

One of the early masterpieces of the Harlem Renaissance, Cane is a novel that is structured as a series of vignettes revolving around the origins and experiences of African Americans in the United States. The vignettes alternate  between narrative prose, poetry, and play-like passages of dialogue, and the settings for the vignettes range from the still-rural South to the urban centers of Washington D.C. and Chicago.
